The .ips extension is shared between two completely different ecosystems, creating significant confusion for users. The most common variant (approx. 80%) is an iOS Analytics File generated by Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac) to log system crashes, panic events, and usage data. While these are technically JSON-formatted text files, they are often dense, unstructured, and difficult for non-developers to interpret. Users typically need to convert these from raw code to readable PDF, TXT, or CSV formats to share with support teams or archive crash history without using the macOS Console app.
The second type is an International Patching System file, a binary patch format used in the video game emulation community. These files contain the difference data needed to modify a game ROM (e.g., for fan translations or bug fixes). The "problem" with legacy IPS patches is their technical limitation: they cannot handle files larger than 16MB and lack data integrity checks (CRC), often leading to failed patches without error messages. For modern emulation, users often look to convert legacy .IPS patches to newer, more robust formats like BPS (Beat Patching System) or UPS, or simply need to apply the patch to a source file (like GBA or SFC) to create a playable game.
