About NDS files
The .nds file extension primarily represents a Nintendo DS Game ROM or a Navigation Data Standard (NDS) database. As a ROM file, it contains an exact digital dump of the data found on an original Nintendo DS physical cartridge. Gamers and archivists use these files to play classic handheld games on modern hardware using emulators like DeSmuME, No$GBA, or MelonDS. In the automotive industry, an .nds file operates as a SQLite-based database storing standardized map data for car navigation systems, managed by the Navigation Data Standard Association. A tiny fraction of .nds files may also belong to legacy Nero DiscSpan compilations.
Both types of .nds files present distinct challenges. ROM files are proprietary binaries compiled specifically for the dual ARM processors in the Nintendo DS hardware. They are not easily editable and require specialized emulators to open. Standard users cannot simply "convert" a playable game into a PC executable or a standard video file without losing the interactive game logic. Similarly, NDS map databases are heavily structured SQLite files that consumer software cannot easily read, and they are often encrypted by the vehicle manufacturer.
Common conversion targets for ROM files usually involve extracting internal assets (like audio tracks to WAV or 2D sprites to PNG) using specialized ROM hacking utilities, or compressing the ROM to ZIP or 7Z to save disk space. For navigation databases, extracting map data to CSV or standard SQLITE might be required for spatial analysis.
Because these formats are either closed binaries or specialized industry databases, standard online converters often fail to process them. Even if the file is a proprietary ROM or a complex database, we can inspect the headers, show internal file structures, and help you determine the best software to extract your data safely.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NDS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NDS file to CIA, 3DS, GBA, ROM, ISO, SAV, EXE, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD or PK3, you can use DeSmuME or similar software from the "Game Emulation or Map Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to NDS, try DeSmuME or another comparable tool in the "Game Emulation or Map Data" category.
The NDS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NDS converter.
