About SMB files

.SMB files primarily serve distinct industrial design sectors. Most commonly, they are proprietary embroidery design files used by V.Stitch Smart Punch software from ZSK Stickmaschinen GmbH. Alternatively, they act as ShapeManager binary model files within Autodesk applications like Autodesk Moldflow. A smaller group of .SMB files are Gerber bottom solder mask files used in PCB design, governed by the RS-274X format from Ucamco.

These formats present massive interoperability problems. .SMB embroidery files are strictly proprietary; you must use expensive ZSK software to view or edit the raw stitch data. For 3D modeling, Autodesk keeps the ShapeManager geometric kernel completely closed, meaning standard CAD viewers fail to open .SMB files natively. While Gerber bottom solder mask files are plain text, they still require specialized Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software to render visually.

Users frequently need to convert these files to overcome vendor lock-in. Embroidery designs must typically be converted to DST, EXP, or PES for broader embroidery machine compatibility. Autodesk models require conversion to universal CAD formats like STEP, IGES, or STL to be usable by third-party manufacturers. Gerber files are often exported as PDF or SVG for rapid visual inspection.

Because .SMB is a closed, proprietary format in both its primary uses, standard online converters often fail to process it. Usually, only the original software can properly read or export the complex 3D or stitch data. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SMB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SMBH, F3D, JPG, BRD, MB, FBX and NFS files.

FAQ

If you want to convert SMB file to NFS, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT or X_T, you can use V.Stitch Smart Punch or similar software from the "Embroidery and CAD Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to SMB, try V.Stitch Smart Punch or another comparable tool in the "Embroidery and CAD Data" category.

The SMB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMB converter.
