The .MB file extension primarily identifies a Maya Binary scene file, the native project format for Autodesk Maya. Unlike its counterpart, the text-based MA (Maya ASCII), .MB files are mathematically compressed to save disk space and reduce load times. While efficient, this binary nature is a common problem: the files are proprietary, meaning they cannot be opened or edited in standard text editors to fix corruption, and they are notoriously difficult to use outside the Autodesk ecosystem. Opening an .MB file typically requires a paid subscription to Maya, presenting a barrier for collaborators using free tools like Blender.
To overcome these interoperability constraints, users frequently need to convert .MB files. For use in game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, converting to FBX is the standard, as it preserves animations, rigging, and textures. For static 3D printing or modeling in tools like ZBrush, converting to OBJ or STL is preferred. If you need to debug code or script within the scene, converting from .MB to MA restores human-readability.
