To convert other file formats to the "Embroidery Machine Data" file type, you need software like Brother PE-Design or a similar tool.
About PES files
The .PES file is a proprietary machine instruction format primarily used by Brother and Bernina embroidery machines. It acts like G-code for a sewing machine, containing exact X and Y coordinates for every stitch, along with jump, trim, and color stop commands. A rare secondary use is as a 2D collision shape data sheet for the PhysicsEditor game development tool. Opening a .PES file natively on Windows or Mac is impossible without specialized software like Brother PE-Design or Embrilliance, which often require expensive licenses. The major disadvantage of this format is its rigid nature; it is a 'machine file' of raw points, not a vector outline. Resizing a .PES file by more than 10-15% will distort the stitch density, leading to thread breaks or ruined fabric. Furthermore, sharing a design with a client who lacks embroidery software is difficult. For broad commercial shop compatibility, convert .PES to DST (Tajima format). If you are moving to a Janome machine, convert to JEF. For web use and client proofs, convert to PNG or JPG. For vector editing, convert to SVG.
