About SFM files
The .SFM extension typically refers to a Samsung S Memo file, a legacy format generated by older Samsung Galaxy devices (like the S2 and S3) for storing handwritten notes and drawings. While essentially containing raster graphic data, these files are proprietary artifacts that modern image viewers and web browsers generally refuse to open. Users often discover these files when recovering data from old backups, only to find their memories locked in an obsolete format. The most practical solution is converting them to standard JPG or PNG files, ensuring compatibility with Google Photos or Windows Photo Viewer.
Alternatively, in business environments, .SFM refers to a Sage 50 Form file used by Sage accounting software. These serve as templates for invoices, checks, and statements. Because they are strictly proprietary to the Sage ecosystem, they cannot be edited in Microsoft Word or standard PDF readers. To share these layouts with clients or non-Sage users, converting them to PDF is the standard workflow for archiving and printing. A third, niche use case involves Standard Format Markers used by SIL International for Bible translation data, which are essentially plain text files best converted to DOCX or HTML for broader formatting and distribution.

The SFM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SFM converter.
