About VTX files
The .VTX file extension primarily identifies an optimized model vertex data file utilized by the Valve Source Engine. These files store hardware-specific 3D mesh data, primarily defining vertices, indices, and Level of Detail (LOD) strips. They do not function alone; a .VTX file must be accompanied by its parent MDL (model geometry) and VVD (vertex data) files to successfully load an asset in PC games. Other less common applications for the .VTX extension include video thumbnail sheet files generated by Video Thumbnails Maker, legacy 3D models from Steve Glanville's Anim8or, retro VTX Chiptune music files, and XML-based template files for Microsoft Visio. The main disadvantage of a .VTX file is its strict proprietary nature. Valve's vertex files cannot be opened natively by web browsers or standard 3D suites like Blender or Autodesk Maya. They are compiled binaries optimized strictly for the Source Engine. If you are dealing with a Visio .VTX file, you are locked behind expensive Microsoft 365 subscriptions to view or edit the diagram. To overcome these limitations, conversion is necessary. For game modding, Source Engine files must be decompiled into SMD or DMX formats before they can be converted to universal 3D formats like OBJ or FBX. For Visio templates, converting to PDF or SVG ensures universal readability. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The VTX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VTX converter.
