An .IPM file typically contains highly structured financial transaction clearing data generated by the Mastercard Interface Processor (MIP). These files facilitate the massive global exchange of interbank payment messages and settlements. However, the .IPM extension is heavily fragmented across entirely different industries. It is also used as a software distribution package by IGEL Universal Management Suite (where it is actually a compressed ZIP archive), as an XML-based video evidence multimedia file by Insight Video Net, and as a proprietary microscopy image format by Media Cybernetics Image-Pro.
The primary disadvantage of the .IPM format is this extreme ambiguity. A financial .IPM is a highly encoded mainframe-style data file that requires specialized, expensive banking middleware to parse. It cannot be opened in standard spreadsheet software without producing gibberish. Likewise, scientific image-based .IPM files require a paid license to natively view or export. Financial clearing files should ideally be parsed into CSV or XML for auditing, while Image-Pro files are best converted to standard TIFF or PNG for sharing.
Because of this massive format fragmentation, .IPM files are extremely difficult to open or convert safely. Standard online converters almost always fail because they blindly guess the file type. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
