The .SEG file extension is a highly fragmented format used primarily in scientific research, genomics, and multimedia production. Most commonly, it acts as a Segmentation Data File. It might store genomic copy number segmentations for the Broad Institute IGV, image segmentation boundaries (like those from the Berkeley Segmentation Dataset), or seismic geophysical data managed by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). In rare cases, it is used by Autodesk Flame as a segmented project archive (internally formatted as a GZIP archive), or as legacy system caches.
Because the .SEG extension is claimed by so many entirely different domains, the underlying format can be plain text, binary, or heavily compressed. This is its biggest disadvantage: a genomic .SEG file requires bioinformatics tools, while a seismic .SEG file needs specialized geophysical viewing software. Without knowing the exact source, standard applications will fail to open it or simply display binary gibberish.
