About SGY files

The .SGY file extension is predominantly used for SEG-Y (Society of Exploration Geophysicists) seismic reflection data files. These files store critical geophysical datasets, including 2D and 3D seismic surveys, and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) measurements. A smaller subset (around 3%) of .SGY files are ZIP-compressed sign-making project files used by SA International (SAi) software.

Professionals use software like OpendTect, Geosoft Oasis montaj, and Prism2 to process these massive datasets. Users frequently need to extract metadata or convert trace headers from .SGY into CSV or TXT formats to analyze survey parameters in a spreadsheet. Standard web browsers and basic text editors cannot read .SGY files because they consist of a complex mix of 3200-byte text headers (historically encoded in legacy EBCDIC format), 400-byte binary headers, and massive arrays of floating-point trace data. These files can easily exceed hundreds of gigabytes, making them extremely difficult to transfer or open without expensive, specialized geophysical workstations.

Converting the actual seismic trace data into standard consumer formats is practically impossible without specialized software. Standard online converters fail entirely because they cannot decode legacy IBM floating-point values or process EBCDIC text blocks.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SGY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SEGY, SEG, JPG, PBF, TDMS and RGN files.

FAQ

If you want to convert SGY file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use OpendTect or similar software from the "Seismic Reflection Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to SGY, try OpendTect or another comparable tool in the "Seismic Reflection Data Storage" category.

The SGY Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SGY converter.
