About SEGY files

The .SEGY file (or SEG-Y) is a highly specialized open standard developed by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists to store seismic reflection data. Geologists and geophysicists use it primarily to map subsurface structures for geological exploration. These files are typically enormous, often spanning hundreds of gigabytes, and require heavy, expensive industry software like OpendTect to open. A major disadvantage of the .SEGY format is its rigid, complex binary structure that includes an archaic 3200-byte text header often encoded in EBCDIC rather than ASCII. This makes the file impossible to open natively in standard operating systems or text editors. Users typically convert the metadata and trace headers into CSV or TXT files to analyze the survey parameters in standard spreadsheet software. For visual sharing, converting data subsets into TIFF or JPG images is the standard workaround. Standard online converters routinely fail to process this format because of its massive size and specialized binary encoding. Often only the original software can properly read or export the full data volume. We can decode the EBCDIC text header and show you the internal metadata without requiring a massive software installation. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SEGY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SGY, SEG, SG2, CSV, ASCII and NETCDF files.

FAQ

If you want to convert SEGY file to CSV, ASCII, NETCDF, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF or DAT, you can use OpendTect or similar software from the "Seismic Geophysical Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to SEGY, try OpendTect or another comparable tool in the "Seismic Geophysical Data Storage" category.

The SEGY Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SEGY converter.
