About GZIP files

The .gzip file is a compressed archive utilizing the DEFLATE algorithm. Developed by The GNU Project, it is natively used in Unix and Linux environments to reduce file sizes for storage or network transfers. The format is also uniquely utilized as a document container in the Polish ePUAP public administration system, and as a compression layer for Apache Parquet columnar data files. You can typically extract these files using standard utilities like GNU Gzip, 7-Zip, or WinRAR (see the Gzip Wikipedia page for technical specifications).

A major limitation of the .gzip format is that it compresses only a single file or data stream. Unlike a ZIP or RAR archive, it does not natively bundle multiple files or retain directory structures unless combined with a TAR archive (creating a .tar.gz). Additionally, Windows environments often lack native, double-click GUI support for the .gzip extension, forcing users to rely on command-line tools or install third-party software.

To resolve these compatibility issues, you must convert the archive. For broad compatibility across Windows and macOS, convert .gzip to ZIP. For higher compression rates, convert to 7Z. If you need to bundle multiple files for Unix systems, use TAR. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GZIP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The GZIP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GZIP converter.
