About ROI files
The .ROI extension is a classic example of a "homograph" in the digital world - one filename shared by completely different software ecosystems. Most frequently (approx. 70% of cases), an .ROI file contains Region of Interest data generated by medical imaging software like OsiriX or scientific tools like ImageJ. In these contexts, the file does not contain the actual image (like a JPG or DICOM); instead, it stores coordinates (polygons, ovals, rectangles) that overlay a specific area of an image for analysis. This creates a significant problem: users often receive an .ROI file without the accompanying source image, rendering the file useless since it is merely a map without a territory. Furthermore, .ROI formats are rarely interoperable; an OsiriX ROI file is binary and distinct from an ImageJ ROI, often requiring specific plugins or scripts to translate between them.
Aside from imaging, .ROI files also serve as proprietary report outputs for ERP systems like Infor SunSystems or Actuate. In these legacy business environments, the file acts as a snapshot of report data, often locked into a specific viewer or database version. For medical and scientific users, the best conversion goal is typically CSV or XML to export the raw coordinate metrics for statistical analysis in Excel. For archiving visual data, converting the ROI (combined with its source image) into a burned-in PDF or annotated PNG is ideal. For business report files, converting to PDF or XLS is standard to make the data accessible outside the original financial software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ROI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted TFT, SEG, 1DXML, IRR and APR files.
The ROI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ROI converter.
