To convert other file formats to the "Bioinformatics & Telemetry Data" file type, you need software like DNASTAR SeqBuilder Pro or a similar tool.
About SBD files
The .SBD file extension represents multiple distinct formats, most commonly a DNA Sequence Project File used by DNASTAR SeqBuilder Pro, or a Short Burst Data (SBD) message used by Iridium satellite communications. Other common uses include SQLite databases for email clients like The Bat!, sound banks for Korg keyboards, and sonar logs for Simrad marine systems. To natively open these files, users typically require specialized, professional-grade software like DNASTAR SeqBuilder Pro for genomics or specific SBD decoder scripts for satellite telemetry payloads.
The main disadvantage of .SBD files is their severe fragmentation and proprietary lock-in. A user receiving an .SBD file often has no idea which application generated it, and it cannot be opened in standard web browsers or document viewers. For DNA research, sharing a proprietary .SBD file forces collaborators to purchase expensive software licenses to view the data. For Iridium data, the files are raw binary payloads that look like gibberish without the exact sensor schema to decode them.
To resolve these sharing restrictions, you must convert the file to an open standard. DNA sequencing files should be converted to universal formats like FASTA or GBK (GenBank). Iridium satellite telemetry and SQLite databases should be exported to CSV, JSON, or plain TXT to allow easy data analysis in tools like Excel or Python.
Because these formats are heavily closed and proprietary, standard online converters usually fail to process them. They cannot magically parse complex binary telemetry or proprietary genomics data without the original engine. Our platform inspects the internal hex and text signatures. If our analysis detects a supported embedded structure - such as an unencrypted SQLite database or raw text strings - viewing or extracting the data may still be possible without the original software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SBD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SBD file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use DNASTAR SeqBuilder Pro or similar software from the "DNA Sequence Project File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to SBD, try DNASTAR SeqBuilder Pro or another comparable tool in the "DNA Sequence Project File" category.
The SBD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SBD converter.
