A .BAK file is a generic file extension used to store backup copies of documents, databases, and project files. It is not a standardized file format. Instead, the originating software appends ".bak" to the end of an existing file to prevent accidental deletion or overwriting during a save process. Because it is utilized by dozens of different applications - including Autodesk AutoCAD, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Word, and Xiaomi's Android MIUI - opening a .BAK file requires knowing exactly which program created it.
The primary disadvantage of .BAK files is this severe lack of standardization. A .BAK file could secretly be a compressed ZIP archive, an encrypted SQL database, or a proprietary binary CAD drawing. Your operating system will not know how to handle it natively, and double-clicking the file almost always results in a confusing error message. Furthermore, these files are often hidden by the system and can silently consume massive amounts of hard drive space, sometimes exceeding hundreds of gigabytes in enterprise SQL database environments.
To actually use the data inside, you must restore the file or convert it back to its original target format. If you know the source, you can target the correct format. For CAD recovery, convert it to DWG. For server databases, extract or restore it to SQL. For Xiaomi Android backups, convert it to ZIP for easy extraction. For generic text or Word backups, converting to DOCX or TXT will let you recover your lost work easily.
