The .lucy file is a user data file that has been mathematically locked by the Black Rose Lucy ransomware. This malicious software targets operating systems (originally Android, later adapting to Windows), encrypting personal files such as photos, documents, and databases. Once encrypted, the malware appends the .lucy extension to the original filename and drops a ransom note demanding cryptocurrency payment for the decryption key.
Because the .lucy file utilizes strong cryptographic algorithms, standard file conversion tools cannot open, edit, or process it. Victims frequently try to convert a .lucy file back to DOCX, JPG, or PDF using generic online converters, but this approach will always fail. You cannot simply delete the .lucy extension to bypass the encryption. To restore the file, you require the unique private key held by the attackers or a specialized decryption utility released by cybersecurity researchers, such as those available via No More Ransom.
This file format is intentionally difficult to open or convert. It is a closed, maliciously engineered format. However, if the file is fully encrypted, conversion back to the original format is impossible without the mathematical decryption key.
