About SEQUENCE files
A .sequence file is primarily a project data file used by xLights, a powerful open-source sequencer for synchronized holiday lighting displays. These files store complex automation data, including channel mappings, timing tracks, and lighting effects (like a "Butterfly" or "Bars" effect) applied to models (e.g., Mega Trees, Matrices).
The Core Problem: Users often mistake .sequence files for playable media. They are data instructions, not video or audio containers. You cannot open them in VLC Media Player or upload them directly to YouTube. They act like a sheet of music: they tell the hardware what to play, but they don't contain the actual light or sound.
Secondary Use Cases: The extension is also utilized by MuseScore (as a music data file) and Online Sequencer (Jacob Morgan's web-based MIDI tool). In these contexts, the file contains note placement, pitch, and duration data.
Conversion Solutions:
For Lighting (xLights): You must open the file in xLights and use the "Render All" function, then "Export" to generate an MP4 video or .FSEQ file for hardware controllers (like Falcon or Kulp).
For Music (MuseScore/Online Sequencer): Use the original software to export the project to MP3 (for listening), MIDI (for editing in a DAW), or PDF (for printable sheet music).

The SEQUENCE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SEQUENCE converter.
