The .RFA file extension primarily represents a Revit Family File. These files store 3D objects - such as doors, windows, and furniture - used within building information modeling (BIM) projects. They are almost exclusively created and managed using Autodesk Revit, a professional architectural design application.
The format relies on a proprietary Microsoft Compound object structure. This presents a major disadvantage: .RFA files are heavily version-locked. A file saved in a newer version of Revit cannot be opened natively in an older version, and opening these files requires a costly software subscription. Furthermore, standard web browsers and general 3D viewers cannot display them natively.
Users typically need to convert .RFA to more accessible formats like DWG, FBX, or IFC for collaboration with engineers or clients who do not use Revit. Converting to OBJ or STL is also common for 3D printing or external rendering. However, because the format is closed and highly proprietary, standard online converters often fail to process the complex parametric data. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the BIM geometry.
