About LCF files
The .LCF extension primarily identifies the ArchiCAD Library Container File, a proprietary archive format developed by Graphisoft for its Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. These files function as virtual folders, consolidating thousands of individual GSM (Geometric Description Language) objects, surface textures, and UI scripts into a single, high-performance package. While this significantly speeds up project loading times within ArchiCAD, the format creates a significant barrier for interoperability. Users often struggle because .LCF files act as "black boxes"; they cannot be opened by standard 3D modelers like Blender or SketchUp directly, nor can individual assets be easily edited without extraction.
To use these assets in other software, the most common workflow involves extracting the container contents to separate GSM files or loading the library in ArchiCAD and exporting the 3D view to universal formats like OBJ, IFC, or DAE.
Secondary Formats: A notable minority of .LCF files are Logger Compact Data files generated by Lascar Electronics data loggers. These contain raw sensor readings (temperature, humidity) that require proprietary software to view. Users with these files typically need to convert them to CSV or XLSX for analysis in Microsoft Excel. Additionally, the legal sector in Quebec utilizes an LCF container for court documents, which effectively wraps standard PDF and XML data in a proprietary shell.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LCF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted RFA, GSM, ICF, ZIP, LCPL, IFC, SKP, DXF, PDF, RCP, DWG, SLDPRT and JPG files.
The LCF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LCF converter.
