About MCS files

The .MCS extension refers to two primary but distinct data formats: FPGA Configuration Memory Files used in hardware development and Mimics Project Files used in medical imaging.

1. Xilinx (AMD) FPGA Configuration

Most .MCS files are ASCII text files formatted in the Intel HEX standard. They are generated by software like Vivado Design Suite to program non-volatile memory (PROM) on FPGA boards.

2. Materialise Mimics Project

In the medical field, .MCS files store 3D segmentation data derived from CT or MRI scans, created by Materialise Mimics.

3. Legacy Formats (Mathcad & Scripts)

Older .MCS files may be Mathcad image components or Mental Canvas scenes. These legacy formats often suffer from "bit rot," becoming unopenable in modern software versions (e.g., Mathcad Prime). Users typically need to archive these as PDF or PNG to preserve the visual data before the software support vanishes completely.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MCS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MCR, GME, SRM, MCD, PDF, TXT, DAT, BIN, V, JED, XCI and BIT files.

The MCS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MCS converter.
