To convert other file formats to the "Firmware Package" file type, you need software like PlayStation System Software or a similar tool.
About PUP files
The .PUP file extension primarily denotes a PlayStation Update Package, a proprietary system file used by Sony to update the firmware on PS3, PS4, and PS5 consoles. These files act as secure containers holding the operating system data, patches, and feature updates. The main limitation of the .PUP format is its rigid, hardware-specific nature; it is heavily encrypted and digitally signed, meaning standard computers cannot open, edit, or "play" these files. Users frequently encounter friction when they download the update to a PC or Mac and attempt to double-click it, resulting in "unknown file format" errors. For the average user, the goal is not to convert the file format itself, but to transfer it successfully; this requires a USB drive formatted to FAT32 or exFAT with a specific folder structure (e.g., PS4/UPDATE). However, for developers and modders analyzing firmware, specialized tools like PS3 PUP Extractor or PUAD GUI can "convert" (decrypt and extract) the contents into raw binary data or ELF executables.
A secondary, less common use is for Puppy Linux installer packages (DotPup). These are legacy archives used to install software on the Puppy Linux operating system. While largely superseded by the PET format, these can often be treated as standard compressed archives; renaming the extension to ZIP or TAR may allow standard tools like 7-Zip to inspect or extract the contents for manual installation.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PUP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PUP file to PKG, ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE or ARJ, you can use PlayStation System Software or similar software from the "System Firmware Update" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to PUP, try PlayStation System Software or another comparable tool in the "System Firmware Update" category.
The PUP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PUP converter.
