The .PUB extension most frequently denotes a Microsoft Publisher Document, a proprietary desktop publishing format created by Microsoft Publisher. While excellent for layout design, .PUB files present significant compatibility hurdles. They are strictly proprietary and can only be natively opened by the desktop version of Publisher, which is notably absent from many Microsoft 365 tiers and is completely unavailable on macOS or mobile devices. Users without the specific software installed are effectively locked out of the content. To overcome this, the standard workflow is converting .PUB to PDF for universal viewing and printing, or JPG for easy sharing on the web. For users needing to extract text for editing in Microsoft Word, converting to DOCX is possible, though complex layout formatting is often lost in translation.
