About VU files

A .vu file is most commonly a video recording or associated data file generated by VU+ digital satellite receivers. These Linux-based set-top boxes (running Enigma2 firmware) capture live DVB-S/S2 satellite broadcasts. While the actual video stream is often stored as a standard Transport Stream (.TS), the .vu extension may be used by specific plugins, firmware images (like Black Hole or VTi), or as a sidecar utility file containing recording metadata (EPG info, cut points).

Users typically encounter friction because Windows Media Player and QuickTime do not recognize the .vu extension, and the underlying MPEG-TS compression can be difficult to edit without synchronization errors. The file often resides on ext3/ext4 formatted drives that are natively unreadable on Windows. To make these recordings playable on iPhones, Smart TVs, or Plex servers, the best workflow is to convert them to MP4 (H.264/AAC) for compatibility or MKV to preserve multiple audio tracks and subtitles.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PUP, MINIPSF and PSAR files.

The VU Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VU converter.
