About PTB files
The .PTB extension primarily belongs to either Power Tab Editor guitar tablature scores or Sage 50 accounting backups.
Power Tab files store musical notation and guitar tablature. They are proprietary binary files created by the abandoned Power Tab Editor. The biggest disadvantage is that the original software only runs on legacy Windows systems and has not seen an official release since 2000. Without a dedicated tablature reader like TuxGuitar, these files are completely unreadable to standard text editors or audio players. Users usually need to convert them to PDF for easy reading or MIDI and GP5 for modern editing. Note that when converting to basic MIDI, advanced guitar articulation data (like slides and bends) is often lost.
Sage 50 Backups (formerly Peachtree) are compressed archives containing sensitive accounting data. While internally using standard ZIP compression, the file structure relies on proprietary database mapping. The major drawback is that fully restoring a .PTB file requires an active, expensive Sage 50 software subscription. Extracting the ZIP manually yields raw database fragments that lack immediate context.
Other rare uses include ProfiCAD title blocks, AVM FRITZ!Box telephone book backups (using an internal JetDB format), and KLA/Orbotech PCB aperture tables.
Because .PTB files are proprietary and specialized, standard online converters usually fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like the ZIP structure in a Sage backup or text in a tablature file - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PTB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PTB file to PPM, PDF, BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ or 7Z, you can use TuxGuitar or similar software from the "Tablature & Data Backup" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to PTB, try TuxGuitar or another comparable tool in the "Tablature & Data Backup" category.
The PTB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PTB converter.
