About TAB files
The .TAB file extension serves multiple distinct purposes, creating confusion for users without the original software. Most critically, it represents a MapInfo TAB file, a proprietary geospatial vector format developed by Precisely. These files define the structure of GIS datasets and typically rely on a cluster of dependent files (like DAT, MAP, ID) to function. Without the full set or specialized software like MapInfo Pro or QGIS, these maps are inaccessible.
Alternatively, .TAB is often shorthand for Tab-Separated Values (TSV), a simple text format used to store structured data where columns are separated by tab characters. While raw text editors can open these, the data often appears misaligned and difficult to read. Another common variation includes Guitar Tablature text files.
To overcome these compatibility hurdles:
- For GIS: Convert MapInfo TAB to KML for Google Earth, SHP for ESRI software, or GEOJSON for web apps.
- For Data: Convert TSV TAB files to CSV or XLSX for seamless opening in Microsoft Excel.
- For Music: Convert text tablature to PDF for archiving and printing.

The TAB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TAB converter.
