About PTD files
The .PTD extension is a classic example of a "chameleon" file format, used by distinct proprietary ecosystems for completely different purposes. Most commonly, users encounter this file as a Brother P-touch label design, a PipeTech pipeline inspection database, or a PhraseExpress text template archive.
A common issue with .PTD files is their lack of interoperability. A label file created in Brother P-touch Editor cannot be opened by Microsoft Word or standard image viewers, creating friction when you need to share a label proof with a client who doesn't have the printer software installed. Similarly, PipeTech inspection data is often locked inside a JetDB-based container, making it difficult to analyze statistics in Microsoft Excel without specific export tools.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For Brother Labels: Convert to PDF for proofing or PNG/JPG for web previews. This preserves the layout without requiring the specific font libraries or printer drivers.
- For PipeTech/Database Files: Convert the internal table data to CSV or XLSX. This allows for flexible data analysis and reporting in spreadsheet software.
- For PhraseExpress/Text Data: Exporting to TXT or XML ensures your snippets can be migrated to other text expansion tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PTD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PTD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PTD converter.
