Convert a file to MPP

To convert other file formats to the "Project Management Plan" file type, you need software like Microsoft Project or a similar tool.

About MPP files

The .MPP file is a project management plan created primarily by Microsoft Project. It stores tasks, timelines, resource allocations, and visual Gantt charts. A tiny fraction of these files are also generated by MobileFrame Project Publisher.

You can open and edit these files using Microsoft Project or free open-source alternatives like ProjectLibre. You can learn more about the history of the software on Wikipedia.

There are significant disadvantages to the .MPP format. It is a proprietary, closed format that typically requires an expensive subscription to open. Standard users cannot view the timelines, making it notoriously difficult to share schedules across teams. The format is entirely unsupported by web browsers and standard office software.

You should convert .MPP files to PDF to share static visual timelines with clients. To migrate task data into issue trackers like Jira or Asana, convert the file to XML or CSV. Be aware that dynamic scheduling rules, resource leveling formulas, and custom visual formatting will be lost during raw data extraction.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it is built on the proprietary Microsoft Compound File Binary Format. It functions like a hidden file system containing complex OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) streams. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the scheduling data. However, just drag and drop your file to see what it is - convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MPP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PROJECT, MMP, MSP, POD, XLSX, MPX, XER, XML, MBB, MPS, WBS, GAN and PIP files.

The MPP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPP converter.
