About PPM files
The .PPM (Portable Pixmap) file is a legacy, 24-bit color image format originally designed by Jef Poskanzer for the Netpbm project. It stores image data as uncompressed RGB (Red, Green, Blue) pixels in either plain text (ASCII) or raw binary formats.
Historically, it served as an intermediate format to transfer images between incompatible computer platforms. You can open .PPM files using specialized viewers like XnView, or open-source editors like GIMP.
Users frequently need to convert .PPM files because the format is extremely inefficient. Since it lacks any form of compression, a single high-resolution .PPM image can consume hundreds of megabytes of disk space. This makes it impossible to share via email or modern messaging applications. Furthermore, standard web browsers do not support .PPM, rendering it useless for web development.
For web usage and sharing, convert .PPM to WEBP or JPG to reduce the file size by over 90%. If you need to archive the image without losing quality, convert it to PNG. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser, without installing legacy software.

The PPM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PPM converter.
