About PPM files

The .ppm (Portable Pixmap) format is a basic, uncompressed raster image developed as part of the Netpbm open-source graphics toolkit. It was designed to be the "lowest common denominator" for exchanging color images between different platforms, capable of storing pixel data in a simple text-based (ASCII) or binary structure. While this makes the format incredibly resilient and easy for developers to parse code against, it presents significant challenges for everyday use.

Because .ppm files lack compression, they are often exponentially larger than modern equivalents like JPG or HEIC, consuming excessive disk space and bandwidth. Furthermore, major web browsers and standard image viewers (including default mobile gallery apps) do not natively display PPM files, making them impossible to use for web design, social media, or email attachments without prior processing.
