About PMM files

The .pmm file is primarily a Polygon Movie Maker project file created by MikuMikuDance (MMD), a popular freeware 3D animation tool used to choreograph dancing anime characters. A much smaller percentage of these files belong to Pegasus Mail, an early email client, where they act as mailbox storage.

To open or edit a 3D .pmm file, you must use the original MikuMikuDance software. These project files are notoriously frustrating to manage and share. A .pmm file does not contain the actual 3D character models (PMX or PMD), stage environments, or motion data (VMD). Instead, it acts as a blueprint, saving absolute local file paths (e.g., C:\Users\Name\MMD\Model.pmx) that tell the software where to find these assets on your hard drive. If you rename a folder or send the .pmm file to a friend, the project will immediately break with "missing file" errors because the linked assets are not included.

Users typically want to convert .pmm files into shareable video formats like MP4 or AVI. However, because it is merely a text-based project blueprint and not a video file, standard online video converters will always fail. You must open the file in MMD and use the "Render to AVI" option to create a video.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is highly proprietary and depends entirely on external local assets. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Even if direct video conversion is impossible, our analysis engine can inspect the file, extract the text-based internal content, and show you exactly which file paths are broken, or reveal if your file is actually a readable Pegasus Mail database.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PMM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PPM, PMX, MPP, BLEND, MMD, VPD and VMD files.

The PMM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PMM converter.
