About PMM files

The .PMM extension primarily serves as the project save file for MikuMikuDance (MMD), a freeware 3D animation tool. It stands for "Polygon Movie Maker." These files do not contain the actual 3D models, textures, or audio data; they only store the references and configuration data (camera angles, timeline keyframes, lighting, and bone positioning) for a specific scene.

Because .PMM files rely on absolute file paths, a frequent point of friction is the "White Model" error. If you move the linked PMD or PMX model files to a different folder after saving the project, MMD cannot locate them, and the project breaks. Furthermore, a .PMM is not a video file; you cannot upload it directly to YouTube or view it in VLC Media Player. It is a proprietary binary format locked to the MMD ecosystem. Compatibility is also fragmented - newer versions of MMD (like v9.x) can open older files, but older versions often crash trying to open newer .PMM files.

Best Conversion Targets:

For Sharing/Web: You must render the project inside MMD to AVI or MP4.
For Use in Blender: Direct conversion is difficult. It is often better to export the motion data as VMD and the models as PMX, then import those into Blender using the mmd_tools plugin.
Legacy Email: In rare cases, .PMM refers to a mailbox file from Pegasus Mail. These should be converted to MBOX or EML for migration to modern clients like Thunderbird.
