The .OXPS format is an Open XML Paper Specification document, originally created by Microsoft as a direct, fixed-layout competitor to Adobe's PDF format. Often generated by the internal Microsoft XPS Document Writer virtual printer, these files are designed to preserve exact document fidelity, ensuring that what you see on the screen is exactly what prints. Internally, an .OXPS file is essentially a standard ZIP archive containing XML markup files, embedded typography, and raster images.
Despite its technical competence, the .OXPS format is largely considered a failed standard. The primary disadvantage of this format is its severe lack of cross-platform compatibility. Native support was removed in default installations of Windows 10 and 11, meaning even modern Windows users struggle to open them without manually installing optional system features. Furthermore, .OXPS files cannot be opened natively on macOS, iOS, Android, or within any standard web browser, making them practically useless for sharing documents in the modern digital workplace.
Because it is notoriously difficult to open or share, users almost universally need to convert .OXPS files to PDF to ensure compatibility across all devices. Converting to DOCX or TXT is also recommended if you need to extract and edit the underlying text.
