Convert a file to PMD
To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Publishing Document" file type, you need software like Adobe InDesign or a similar tool.
About PMD files
A .pmd file most commonly represents a legacy page layout created by Adobe PageMaker, the predecessor to Adobe InDesign. These files were the industry standard for desktop publishing in the late 90s and early 2000s, containing formatted text, raster images, and drawn objects. The primary challenge users face is that Adobe PageMaker was discontinued in 2001, and modern versions of Adobe InDesign (CC era) no longer support opening .pmd files directly. This creates a "digital lock-in" where valuable archival content - brochures, newsletters, and magazines - becomes inaccessible without specific legacy software (like InDesign CS6) acting as a bridge.
To preserve this data, the best practice is converting .pmd files to PDF (Portable Document Format) for universal viewing and archiving. If editing is required, users typically must convert the file to the INDD format using an intermediate version of InDesign.
Alternatively, a .pmd file may be a Polygon Model Data file used by MikuMikuDance (MMD) for 3D character animation, or a model file for the Prism3D engine used by SCS Software. These 3D formats are often proprietary and incompatible with standard modeling tools. For these users, converting to OBJ or FBX is essential to import assets into Blender or Maya. Whether you have a vintage document or a 3D anime model, convert.guru can identify the format and facilitate the conversion.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your PMD file.
If you want to convert PMD file to JPG, XPS, INDD, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND or MA, you can use Adobe InDesign or similar software from the "Desktop Publishing Layout" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to PMD, try Adobe InDesign or another comparable tool in the "Desktop Publishing Layout" category.
The PMD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PMD converter.
