About OUT files

The .OUT file extension is one of the most ambiguous formats in computing. It literally stands for "output." Its contents depend entirely on the program that created it. Most often, an .OUT file is either a compiled executable program in Unix-like operating systems (typically in ELF format) or a generic plain-text log generated by server software like Apache Tomcat. In specific enterprise setups, .OUT files might be generated business reports from Oracle Reports Services or Indian Customs EDI query replies.

The main disadvantage of the .OUT format is its complete lack of standard file association. Windows systems do not know how to open it natively, and double-clicking it usually results in a frustrating prompt asking you to choose an application. Furthermore, because it is a generic extension, your operating system cannot preview it. It is highly confusing for average users because the file could be a harmless text log, a disguised PDF document, or a potentially dangerous executable binary. Sending an .OUT file to a client or colleague almost guarantees they will not be able to open it. If the file is a text-based log, convert it to TXT or LOG for universal reading. If it is an Oracle generated report, it is likely a hidden PDF file. Convert it to PDF for standard viewing and printing. For web archiving, convert raw text outputs to CSV if they contain structured data. We analyze the file's internal header to determine its true format, bypassing the confusing extension entirely.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OUT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ALN-CLUSTAL_NUM, ALN, INP, ELF, PIM, BIN, PRN, RTF, DAT, DB, EDF, EZD and MAX files.

The OUT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OUT converter.
