About EDF files

The .edf extension primarily denotes the European Data Format, a standard file type developed for the exchange and storage of multichannel biological and physical signals. It is the de facto standard for Polygraphy and Polysomnography (sleep) recordings, commonly storing EEG, ECG, and EMG data. While highly efficient for storing time-series data, .edf files are binary and cannot be opened in standard text editors or spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. This format often presents compatibility hurdles for researchers who need to visualize signals without specialized tools like EDFbrowser or MATLAB. Furthermore, the files can become unwieldy in size due to high sampling rates. To analyze this data statistically or share it with non-specialists, users should convert .edf to CSV or TSV for spreadsheet manipulation, or to PDF for generating static reports of signal traces.

Less commonly, an .edf file may represent an Edificius Project file used by ACCA Software for Building Information Modeling (BIM), or a locked game resource file for RF Online. These proprietary formats are strictly tied to their respective ecosystems, making them difficult to access without the original software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EDF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CRC, PDF, EDF2, EEG, SEIZURES, ZIP, TGT, EBF, DATALOG, PNG, JPG, EPUB and DOCX files.

FAQ

If you want to convert EDF file to CSV, PDF, MAT, ASCII, DAT, TXT, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA or SKP, you can use EDFbrowser or similar software from the "Biomedical Signal Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to EDF, try EDFbrowser or another comparable tool in the "Biomedical Signal Storage" category.

The EDF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EDF converter.
