Extract text from contact backups (PIM)
To convert PIM backups to another format, you need Contact Manager or other Data software.
To convert other file formats to the "Device Data Backup" file type, you need software like Contact Manager or a similar tool.
A .PIM file is primarily used as a Phone contact backup file, typically containing address book data formatted under the vCard standard. However, the .PIM extension suffers from severe format collision and is used by multiple unrelated industries. It can also act as a Chlorophyll fluorescence imaging data file created by hardware from Photon Systems Instruments (using zlib compression), an XML label design project for Pimaco Assistente+, a Percent Identity Matrix from Clustal sequence alignment software, or a Passive Intermodulation test data file exported by an Anritsu PIM Master analyzer.
This extreme fragmentation makes .PIM files highly problematic for standard software. Users frequently encounter these files when transferring contacts from older feature phones or receiving raw scientific data. A proprietary Anritsu or PSI data file cannot be opened without expensive, specialized software suites. A Pimaco label file only contains XML coordinates, not the final graphics, making direct image conversion impossible without rendering it first.
For contact backups, the best conversion target is VCF or CSV for modern smartphone import. Label projects should ideally be exported to PDF. Scientific matrices can often be converted to CSV or TXT.
