To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary Cache Format" file type, you need software like Autodesk Navisworks or a similar tool.
The .NWC file extension is split between two completely different, highly proprietary formats. Most commonly, it is an Autodesk Navisworks Cache file. When Navisworks opens a native CAD file (like DWG or RVT), it automatically generates an .NWC file to drastically speed up future loading times. Alternatively, .NWC is used as a music notation score by NoteWorthy Composer, storing notes, rests, and playback data.
Both formats share a major disadvantage: they are heavily locked into their native ecosystems. Navisworks cache files are practically useless without the original CAD models or Navisworks software. NoteWorthy Composer files require a paid Windows-only application or a specialized viewer, making them incredibly difficult to share with musicians using standard software like Finale or Sibelius. Furthermore, neither format is supported by web browsers or standard OS preview tools.
Users frequently need to convert .NWC files to break out of these closed systems. For music scores, the best target formats are PDF for sheet music printing, MIDI for audio playback, or MusicXML for editing in other notation software. For 3D cache files, users typically want to export the geometry to NWD, PDF, or FBX, though this usually requires the original software.
