A .nws file is most commonly a Windows Live Mail Newsgroup File, a format created by legacy Microsoft email clients like Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail. These files act as local cached copies of Usenet newsgroup posts, typically containing the message header and body in plain text or HTML. Users often encounter them when restoring old backups or migrating data from Windows XP/Vista machines.
A significant minority (approx. 17%) of these files may be Publisher Newsletter Documents created by older versions of Microsoft Publisher or related desktop publishing software like PageMaker.
The biggest challenge with .nws files is that modern email clients (like Outlook 365) and operating systems no longer recognize the extension, leaving users unable to view archived discussions or designs.
For newsgroup messages, the best conversion target is EML (to import into Mozilla Thunderbird) or PDF (for archiving). For newsletter variants, converting to PDF is essential to preserve the layout without requiring the original legacy software.
