About NM2 files

An .nm2 file is a proprietary, compiled vector map file used by Navitel Navigator, a prominent GPS navigation application. These files contain detailed geographical data, including road networks, points of interest (POIs), building footprints, and routing algorithms used for turn-by-turn directions. They were historically popular for community-driven map projects derived from OpenStreetMap data.

The primary disadvantage of the .nm2 format is its closed, proprietary nature. Files often exceed 100MB and cannot be opened by standard web browsers, standard image viewers, or even professional GIS software like QGIS. Users are locked into the Navitel ecosystem. Furthermore, it is an older format; modern Navitel software uses the even more restrictive and encrypted NM3 or NM7 extensions.

Users typically need to convert .nm2 files to open standards like GPX for waypoint tracking, KML for viewing in Google Earth, or the MP (Polish Map) format for editing in tools like GPSMapEdit. Conversion often results in the loss of proprietary routing algorithms and specific map rendering instructions.

Because .nm2 is a compiled binary format with undocumented structures, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original software or specialized, reverse-engineered community tools can properly read or export the geometric data. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. We can inspect the file headers and show internal text strings, and if our analysis detects an unencrypted or supported underlying format, partial viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NM2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NM, PSI, MPA, ATM and CM2 files.

FAQ

If you want to convert NM2 file to PSI, MPA, ATM, CM2, NM, SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON or TIF, you can use Navitel Navigator or similar software from the "GPS navigation map data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to NM2, try Navitel Navigator or another comparable tool in the "GPS navigation map data" category.

The NM2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NM2 converter.
