About NM3 files

The .nm3 file is a proprietary geographic map package developed by Navitel. It is primarily used to store comprehensive cartographic data, including road networks, points of interest (POIs), 3D landmarks, speed camera alerts, and precise GPS routing instructions for navigation systems.

This format is specifically designed to be read by Navitel Navigator, a popular multi-platform GPS software used on Android, iOS, and dedicated in-car Windows CE devices. It is less commonly known as a DNMR3 Input Data file for dynamic NMR spectroscopy, though the vast majority of files belong to Navitel.

The severe disadvantage of the .nm3 format is its heavily locked, proprietary nature. Navitel intentionally obscures the binary structure to prevent unauthorized duplication and map piracy. This creates massive limits for users: you cannot import these maps into standard tools like QGIS, view them on Google Maps, or load them onto a Garmin device. Your geographic data is trapped in a closed ecosystem, requiring a specific app to even view the map.

If you need to extract waypoints or track data, the ideal target formats are universal standards like GPX (for tracks), KML (for Google Earth), or GEOJSON. Keep in mind that full-scale map topology will be lost, as standard formats do not support Navitel's proprietary 3D rendering or traffic rules.

This file format is incredibly difficult to convert. Standard online converters fail instantly because they lack the proprietary decryption algorithms required to read Navitel's internal data structures. Often, only the original Navitel software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects supported standard layers, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NM3 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The NM3 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NM3 converter.
