About MP files

The .mp file extension is a highly fragmented format. In 60% of cases, it functions as a truncated or renamed MPEG-4 Part 14 video container. It is also heavily used as a UI/UX design project file for Mockplus (which is internally a ZIP archive), a Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) management pack, or a Polish format map for GPSMapEdit.

Video-based .mp files can be played natively in VLC media player. Mockplus design files require the proprietary desktop app, and Polish map files open in GPSMapEdit.

The primary disadvantage of the .mp file is its extreme ambiguity. Because it serves over eight distinct software ecosystems, operating systems frequently fail to assign the correct default application. Truncated video files will not play in web browsers without being renamed to MP4. Mockplus projects are locked into a proprietary ecosystem, making it difficult to share design assets with clients who do not have a paid license. SCOM management packs are compiled and unreadable without specialized extraction tools.
