The .MHT (or MHTML) file extension stands for MIME HTML, a format used to archive a complete web page into a single file. Unlike standard HTML pages that store images, CSS, and scripts in separate folders, an .MHT file encodes all multimedia resources using Base64 and bundles them together with the text. Users typically create these files to save articles, receipts, or documentation for offline reading. Historically, this format was the native web saving standard for Microsoft Internet Explorer and is currently supported by Microsoft Edge.
Despite its convenience for single-file storage, the .MHT format has severe disadvantages today. It is a legacy standard with highly inconsistent cross-platform support. Mozilla Firefox requires third-party add-ons to read it, and Apple's Safari ignores it entirely in favor of its own proprietary WEBARCHIVE format. Furthermore, .MHT files are notoriously difficult to edit manually, and mobile browsers on iOS and Android frequently fail to open them at all. A smaller percentage of these files are also generated as Tencent IM message archives or Fasoo NASCA DRM archives, which are heavily restricted and locked to proprietary viewers.
