About MHT files

An .MHT file (short for MHTML) is a web archive format that saves a complete webpage - including text, images, CSS, and scripts - into a single file using MIME encoding. Unlike standard HTML pages that store assets in a separate folder, .MHT files encapsulate everything, making them convenient for emailing or offline storage. Originally championed by Microsoft Internet Explorer, they are also used by Microsoft Word and Outlook to display complex email formatting.

However, .MHT files face significant compatibility hurdles in the modern web ecosystem. While Internet Explorer is obsolete, modern browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox often require specific flags or extensions to display them correctly, leading to broken layouts or "Download" loops. Mobile support on iOS and Android is virtually non-existent without third-party apps. Furthermore, keeping data locked in .MHT creates a proprietary dependency; editing the content is difficult, and extracting a single image requires specialized tools.

To ensure your archived content remains accessible and visually consistent, the best solution is conversion. For long-term archiving and sharing, convert .MHT to PDF (Portable Document Format) to lock in the layout across all devices. If you need to recover the source images or edit the code, converting to standard HTML creates a file structure web developers can use. For quick visual references, converting to JPG or PNG provides a universal snapshot.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MHT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EDGE, MHTML, HMT, MFT, BIN, MMT, MNT, MTH, MTL, ASPX, MHP, MRT and ERP files.

The MHT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MHT converter.
