About MHTML files
The .MHTML (MIME HTML) format is a web archive standard that encapsulates an entire webpage - including HTML code, CSS styles, JavaScript, and external resources like images and audio - into a single file. Unlike standard HTML pages which rely on a separate folder for assets (e.g., index.html plus an index_files folder), MHTML uses MIME encoding (similar to email attachments) to bundle everything together. This makes it a popular choice for saving offline copies of websites via browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, or for recording Problem Steps Recorder sessions in Windows.
However, relying on .MHTML for long-term storage or sharing is a key problem. Support is inconsistent across ecosystems; while Chromium-based browsers handle them well, users on Mozilla Firefox or mobile devices (iOS/Android) often cannot open them without third-party tools. Furthermore, the MIME encoding makes the file difficult to edit in standard text editors, and email clients often block them due to potential script security risks. To overcome these limitations, users should convert .MHTML files based on their intent:
For Sharing and Archiving: Convert to PDF. This ensures the visual layout is preserved and the document is accessible on any device without browser dependencies.
For Editing: Convert to DOCX. This allows you to modify the text and images within Microsoft Word.
For Web Development: Convert back to standard HTML. This unpacks the archive, separating the code from the image assets for easier manipulation.
For Visual Reference: Convert to JPG or PNG to create a static snapshot of the page.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MHTML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MHTML Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MHTML converter.
