About MHTML files

An .MHTML (MIME HTML) file is a single-file web page archive. Unlike standard HTML, which saves the page structure and keeps images, CSS, and audio as separate linked files, an .MHTML file embeds all these assets into a single document using Base64 encoding. This format was originally introduced by Microsoft in Internet Explorer and is now heavily utilized by Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge to save pages for offline reading. You can learn more about its technical history on its Wikipedia page.

Despite its convenience for desktop offline reading, the .MHTML format has severe limitations. It is an outdated standard that lacks native support on mobile operating systems like iOS, meaning users cannot open these files easily on iPhones or iPads. Furthermore, because .MHTML files can bundle executable scripts (like JavaScript), they pose a significant security risk as vectors for malware delivery. The Base64 encoding process also bloats the file size by roughly 33% compared to standard web files.

To bypass these limitations, conversion is necessary. For universal sharing, archiving, or mobile viewing, convert .MHTML to PDF, which flattens the layout and removes malicious scripts. For visual reference, convert the file to JPG or PNG. If you need to edit the website code, extract the archive back to standard HTML and an accompanying asset folder.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MHTML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EDGE, MHT, HTML, BIN, MIME, MTL, ASPX, PDF, URL, MICRO, DOCX, ENC and HMT files.
