About MNT files
The .MNT extension represents two distinct but highly technical file types that often cause compatibility headaches due to their specialized nature.
The most common variant (approx. 30%) is a 3D Surface Measurement file used by optical metrology systems like Bruker Alicona and analyzed within MountainsMap. These files store high-precision topography data formatted as a Microsoft Compound Document. The problem is that this format is strictly proprietary; standard 3D modeling tools like Blender or AutoCAD cannot native read them. Users typically need to extract the geometry to STL or OBJ formats to use the scan data in CAD workflows, or convert the height maps to TIFF for visualization outside of expensive metrology suites.
The second common type is a PCB Pick and Place file generated by electronics design automation (EDA) software such as Autodesk EAGLE, DipTrace, or KiCad. These files contain coordinate data (X, Y, Rotation) used to tell robotic machines where to mount components on a circuit board. While critical for manufacturing, these files are often raw text or obscurely formatted lists that are difficult for humans to audit. Engineers frequently need to convert these .MNT files to CSV or Excel (XLSX) to manually verify component placement, generate Bills of Materials (BOM), or migrate data between different PCB design tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MNT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MHT, MNTJ, MNTM, JPG, PNG, JPEG, PY, SUR, SLC, RAW and SGD files.
The MNT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MNT converter.
