A .MNT file primarily stores either 3D surface measurement data from optical systems or PCB (Printed Circuit Board) pick-and-place coordinates. The 3D measurement variants are generated by Alicona hardware and analyzed using surface metrology software like MountainsMap. The PCB variants are generated by electronic design automation (EDA) tools like Autodesk EAGLE and DipTrace to tell manufacturing machines exactly where to mount components onto a board.
The main disadvantage of the .MNT format is its extreme fragmentation. The Alicona 3D variant is a closed, proprietary file based on the Microsoft Compound structure. Opening it requires expensive, specialized industrial software. If you lack the original software, the 3D data is locked. Conversely, PCB pick-and-place .MNT files are often plain text but are strictly formatted; any slight syntax error will cause assembly line machines to fail.
When conversion is necessary, PCB .MNT files are best converted to standard CSV or TXT for manual review, or directly into a Gerber format. 3D measurement .MNT files should ideally be exported to STL or OBJ for broader CAD compatibility, though this usually must be done inside MountainsMap.
Because this file extension is shared by niche industrial machines, enterprise databases like Oracle Retail Xstore, and PCB tools, standard online converters fail completely. They do not possess the proprietary libraries needed to decode Alicona binaries or Oracle data loaders.
