About LAYOUT files
A .layout file is primarily a 2D presentation document created by SketchUp LayOut. Professionals use it to combine 3D SKP models with text, dimensions, and 2D vector graphics to generate architectural construction documents. Alternatively, the .layout extension is utilized by IDEs like Code::Blocks and Dev-C++ to save workspace window positions, or by game engines like the DayZ Enfusion Engine to define user interface structures. The primary SketchUp .layout format is highly proprietary and fundamentally restrictive. It requires a paid subscription to SketchUp Pro to open or edit natively. These files can grow massive, are frequently plagued by missing external references, and cannot be viewed directly in standard web browsers or mobile devices. This vendor lock-in prevents clients and contractors from reviewing floor plans unless they also own the expensive software. To share these designs universally, you must convert the source file. For digital archiving, printing, and client review, convert to PDF. For embedding in websites or quick sharing, convert to PNG or JPG. If you are dealing with a text-based IDE configuration, converting to standard XML or JSON makes the code universally readable.
