About GIC files

A .GIC file typically functions as a Global Mapper Catalog file. These files are used in Blue Marble Global Mapper to logically group and reference multiple geospatial data files, such as raster imagery or elevation grids, without merging them into a single massive dataset. A secondary but notable use for the .GIC extension is as a specialized Microsoft Jet Database file utilizing the Jet Database Engine. Finally, it may contain data for Geomagnetically Induced Current (GIC) models. Users usually need to convert .GIC files because they are highly software-specific. If you do not have a paid license for Global Mapper or compatible GIS software like GeoMedia Intergraph, you cannot open a catalog file to see the mapped references. The primary disadvantage of this format is that it does not contain the actual geospatial data but only text-based file paths and metadata. If the referenced source files are moved or deleted, the .GIC catalog becomes instantly broken and useless. If you need to share the metadata, your best option is to convert the .GIC file to a standard CSV or TXT file. Alternatively, if it is a Jet Database file, extracting the tables to CSV or XLSX is the most practical workaround. You will lose the spatial mapping capabilities, but the raw text, coordinates, and file references will be preserved. Standard online converters fail to process .GIC files because they are often proprietary or act strictly as local pointer files. Because a catalog file relies on local directories to function, remote conversion tools cannot easily rebuild the map. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. Our system will inspect the internal structure, which is often encoded in UTF-16, and show you the underlying text. If our analysis detects a supported embedded database or catalog text, viewing or conversion to a generic data format may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GIC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LAY6, DT2, GMP and GPM files.

The GIC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GIC converter.
