A .KST file is most commonly an XML-based data plotting session file used by the open-source Kst tool to view and analyze large scientific datasets. However, the .KST extension is highly fragmented. It is also used heavily in Poland for construction cost estimates by Athenasoft Norma PRO. Other niche applications include project data for Keithley KickStart Software, security certificates as a Java KeyStore file, encrypted game data for the CrossFire online shooter, and even medical patient records from Karl Storz endoscopy systems.
Working with .KST files presents major challenges because they are heavily domain-specific. A Norma PRO estimate is a proprietary binary format that requires an expensive software license to open. Kst plotting files have a different limitation: they only store the visual layout and session settings in XML, meaning the actual raw data is not stored inside the file itself. Furthermore, Java KeyStore and CrossFire game files are intentionally encrypted to prevent unauthorized access and tampering.
Conversion targets depend entirely on the file's origin. Kst plotting sessions can be saved as standard XML or TXT files for easy reading. Keithley KickStart files are actually standard compressed archives and can be safely renamed to ZIP to extract the internal CSV data. Norma PRO estimates should ideally be exported natively to PDF or XLSX to share with clients who do not own the Athenasoft software.
Standard online converters fail to process .KST files because they cannot guess which of the 8+ different formats a specific file represents.
