Convert GMT to another file type
To convert GMT models to another format, you need GSEA or other Data software.
Convert a file to GMT
To convert other file formats to the "Bioinformatics Data File" file type, you need software like GSEA or a similar tool.
About GMT files
The .GMT (Gene Matrix Transposed) file is primarily a tab-delimited text file used by GSEA (Gene Set Enrichment Analysis) to describe gene sets in bioinformatics. Alternatively, the .GMT extension is used for proprietary 3D game models and animations (notably in the Dragon Engine for Yakuza games and rFactor simulators), garment marker data files in Gerber Accumark or PAD System, and even CNC laser program files for TRUMPF machines.
You can natively open gene set .GMT files using standard text editors, while game models and CAD markers require niche plugins or expensive proprietary software. The format's main disadvantage is its sheer ambiguity. Because .GMT is shared across vastly different industries, double-clicking it usually results in an OS error or loads unreadable binary gibberish if a text editor tries to open a 3D model. Furthermore, Gene Matrix text files often contain massive arrays of tab-separated data that become difficult to manage without proper data parsing tools.
For bioinformatics use, convert .GMT to CSV or JSON for seamless integration into Python pipelines, R scripts, or Microsoft Excel. For 3D models, converting .GMT to OBJ or FBX allows you to edit the assets in standard software like Blender.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GMT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GMT file to IST, EST, CST, PST, UTC, EDT, MST, SGT, CDT, OBJ, FBX or DAE, you can use GSEA or similar software from the "Gene Set Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to GMT, try GSEA or another comparable tool in the "Gene Set Data Storage" category.
The GMT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMT converter.
