A .SET file is a multi-purpose format primarily used as a configuration or dataset file by dozens of entirely unrelated software applications. Because 'SET' simply stands for 'Settings' or 'Set,' there is no universal standard. The most common uses include Expert Advisor (EA) trading strategy parameters in the MetaTrader platform, EEG brainwave datasets in the EEGLAB MATLAB toolbox, and hardware configurations for Tektronix oscilloscopes. It is also famously used for storing game settings in titles like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The main disadvantage of a .SET file is its extreme fragmentation. A MetaTrader .SET file (which is a UTF-16 LE text file) is completely incompatible with an EEGLAB .SET file (a MATLAB binary) or a Mobirise Icon Set (which is actually a renamed ZIP archive). This causes immense confusion. You cannot double-click a .SET file and expect your operating system to know what to do unless the exact parent software is installed.
Because of this fragmentation, standard online converters usually fail. Text-based settings files should ideally be converted to universal formats like TXT, JSON, or CSV for readability. For binary datasets, you generally need the original software to export the data safely.
