To convert other file formats to the "Split Archive Volume" file type, you need software like 7-Zip or a similar tool.
About 001 files
A .001 file is the first segment of a split multi-volume archive or a split disk image. It is created when a large file is deliberately divided into smaller chunks to bypass file size limits on FAT32 drives, email attachments, or older storage media. The most common underlying formats are 7Z, ZIP, or RAR. In rarer cases, it functions as a software-specific file, such as a Sage 50 Accounts payroll backup, a Norton Ghost disk image, or even semiconductor inspection data.
Typically, you open these files with 7-Zip or WinRAR.
The biggest disadvantage of a .001 file is its strict dependency on the rest of the sequence. A standalone .001 file is practically useless. You cannot extract the contents unless you possess the 002, 003, and all subsequent parts, and they must be stored in the exact same directory with identical base names. Furthermore, the format itself obscures the underlying compression type, leading to frustrating extraction errors if the wrong unarchiver is used.
Because of these limitations, you cannot directly convert a single .001 piece into a standard file. You must combine them first. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software. Once identified and extracted, we recommend converting the data to standard ZIP for easy sharing, or converting the enclosed files directly to universal formats like PDF for archiving and JPG for web use.

The 001 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 001 converter.
