About 001 files
A .001 file is most commonly the first segment of a multi-volume archive created by compression utilities like 7-Zip or HJSplit. These files are generated when a massive file (such as a disk image, high-resolution video, or backup) is sliced into smaller, manageable chunks to bypass email attachment limits or file system size restrictions (like the 4GB limit on FAT32 drives). A major drawback of this format is fragmentation: a .001 file is functionally useless on its own. To access the content, you must possess the entire sequence (.002, .003, etc.) located in the same directory. Users frequently encounter errors trying to open these with standard media players or text editors, as the operating system does not see them as valid files until they are joined. In rare enterprise cases, this extension is also used by Sage 50 Accounts for backup data, which creates a risk of misidentifying financial records as generic archives. For most users, the solution is to extract the archive, which effectively converts the split parts back into their original functional format (e.g., MP4, ISO, DOCX).

The 001 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 001 converter.
