A .001 file is the first segment of a split multi-volume archive or a split disk image. The biggest disadvantage of a .001 file is its strict dependency on the rest of the sequence. A standalone .001 file is practically useless. You cannot extract the contents unless you possess the 002, 003, and all subsequent parts, and they must be stored in the exact same directory with identical base names. Furthermore, the format itself obscures the underlying compression type, leading to frustrating extraction errors if the wrong unarchiver is used.
