About IML files
The .IML file format is primarily an XML-based project configuration file used by JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA. It stores crucial metadata about a specific development module, including source paths, dependencies, and component configurations. While standard in Java development, these files are heavily tied to the JetBrains ecosystem. The main disadvantage of the .IML format is its strict software dependency. Without a specialized Integrated Development Environment (IDE), it is just raw markup code that is difficult for non-technical stakeholders to interpret. Furthermore, .IML can also refer to legacy IncrediMail email messages, HP Integrated Management Logs, or Linkam temperature control data. If you have an email-based .IML file, you cannot read it in modern mail clients without conversion. To overcome these limits, converting to generic formats is highly recommended. For development documentation, convert to TXT or HTML. For email archiving, convert IncrediMail files to standard EML or PDF.
