About IFO files

The .IFO file is a critical component of the DVD-Video structure, acting as the roadmap for the disc's content. Known as an InFOrmation file, it resides in the VIDEO_TS directory and dictates how the DVD player interacts with the actual video and audio data stored in corresponding VOB files. It contains essential metadata such as chapter markers, subtitles tracks, audio language options, and menu navigation logic.

While indispensable for physical discs, .IFO files present significant hurdles for modern digital playback. First and foremost, an .IFO file is not a video file; it is merely a controller. You cannot "watch" an IFO file on its own - it requires the heavy VOB files to be present in the exact same directory. This reliance on a rigid folder structure makes sharing or playing specific clips on mobile devices, tablets, or smart TVs nearly impossible. Furthermore, standard media players often fail to interpret standalone IFO files without the full DVD context. To make this content accessible, the most practical solution is converting the DVD title referenced by the IFO into a standalone container. For universal compatibility with web browsers and smartphones, converting to MP4 (H.264) is the industry standard. For archiving movies while preserving multiple audio tracks and subtitles, converting to MKV is the superior choice.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IFO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BUP, VOB, VLC, VTS, DVD, MP4, VIDEO_TS, ZIP, VRO, MRL, DAT, VTC and UDF files.

The IFO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IFO converter.
